RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0

Aesthetics

The RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0 is a stunning update to the classic design. Bandai has refined the proportions, making it look more dynamic and anime-accurate while keeping the mechanical detailing RG kits are known for. The color separation is excellent, with molded parts in different shades, giving it a realistic and premium look without the need for paint. The panel lining is subtle but effective, adding depth without being excessive.

RX-78 animated

The RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0 is one of the best RG gunplas every builder should experience.

Decals

The kit comes with an extensive sheet of water-slide-style stickers, providing various markings and mechanical details. While they enhance the realistic feel, some may find them excessive, especially if aiming for a cleaner look. The application process can be time-consuming, but the result is worth it, giving the Gundam a more professional, layered appearance.

Size

As an RG kit, the RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0 maintains the standard 1/144 scale. However, thanks to its proportions and detailing, it appears more imposing than a typical HG kit. Despite its compact size, it has a presence on display, standing at approximately 12.5 cm (5 inches) tall.

Accessories

This kit includes a solid range of accessories:

  • Beam Rifle – Features a movable scope and can be held securely.
  • Beam Saber x2 – Clear effect parts included for an extra dynamic touch.
  • Shield – Attaches securely to the forearm or backpack.
  • Hyper Bazooka – Can be mounted on the back when not in use.
  • Core Fighter – Transforms and integrates into the torso, maintaining the classic RX-78-2 design.

The accessories are well-molded and fit naturally with the figure, enhancing its display options.

Articulation

The articulation on the Ver. 2.0 is a significant improvement over the original RG RX-78-2. The updated inner frame allows for more fluid movement without the fragility that plagued the first version. The joints are tight yet flexible, making posing easier and more dynamic.

Head

The head features excellent articulation, capable of looking up, down, and side-to-side smoothly. The detailing is crisp, and the dual-eye separation enhances its realism.

Arm

The arms feature double-jointed elbows, allowing for deep bends. The shoulders can extend outward, providing a better range for wielding weapons. The hands use the standard RG articulated fingers, which can sometimes be tricky to hold weapons securely but work well with patience.

Waist

The waist articulation is impressive, allowing for slight tilts and rotation without compromising stability. The Core Fighter integration does limit movement slightly, but it’s a worthy trade-off for maintaining the classic transformation gimmick.

Leg

Double-jointed knees and a smart frame design allow for deep bending and natural-looking stances. The ankle joints are stable, providing excellent balance even in action poses.

Poses

The RG RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0 excels in posing. It can achieve dynamic action stances, kneeling poses, and mid-air battle scenes with ease. The improved stability compared to its predecessor means fewer frustrating falls or balance issues.

Verdict

The RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0 is a must-have for any Gunpla enthusiast, whether you’re a fan of the original Mobile Suit Gundam or just looking for a solid Real Grade kit. With enhanced articulation, better durability, and excellent accessories, it surpasses the original RG RX-78-2 in almost every way. While the decals might be a bit much for some, and the Core Fighter limits waist movement slightly, these are minor drawbacks in an otherwise fantastic kit.

Final Score: 9.5/10

A near-perfect representation of the RX-78-2 with the best balance of detail, articulation, and build quality in a 1/144 scale kit.

Highly recommended!
